K.A. Custom Griffon Framelock
A classic staple in the Kingdom Armory lineup, the Griffon is still one of Dave's favorite designs and one that is always in his personal EDC rotation. A modified sheep's foot blade profile is an unbelievably useful and utility driven shape, really giving you both the cutting power of a straight edge, but with the strength and practicality of a drop point nose.
Named for the mythical creature to which the knife bears a striking resemblance, the Griffon is a whole lot of fierce packed into a small profile. Body of a lion, head and talons of an Eagle? Yup that'll work! Plus, Pliny the Elder wrote, "Griffons were said to lay eggs in burrows on the grounds and these nests contained gold nuggets." So its got that going for it too!
This particular folder is fresh off the bench and built out as a beefy framelock in 6al4V titanium, on the lock side and force patina'd brass on the scale. The entire frame was given a CC'd contour profile and then textured in a "jigged" stag pattern, which presents as a nice rounded and comfortable feel in the hand. A solid brass backspacer and hand fabricated clip made from a small billet of Ti itself make for an extremely solid folder. Going even a bit further on this build....the clip was also textured to match and blend in with the frame treatment! This is the first Dave has pulled that one off, and took 21 independent hand fabrication steps just in itself.
All titanium has been bead blasted then tumbled for a nice grey tone the will hold up well to everyday use. The addition of the Hinderer Knives Lock Bar Stabilizer (used under license) further secures and strengthens the framelock, doing double duty as both overtravel stop and lateral stabilizer.
The blade was hand hollow ground from Swedish RWL-34 and heat treated by Bos to a rockwell of 58rc. A satin stonewashed finish completes the blade and will prove to be extremely durable in use. Spydie hole used as the opening method under license from Spyderco, Inc.
Folder will ship in a hand sewn felt slip, and enclosed in a waterproof storage case. Signed and dated.
