KA Custom - Griffon Framelock
A classic staple in the Kingdom Armory lineup, the Griffon is still one of Dave's favorite deisgns and one that is always in his personal EDC rotation. A modified sheep's foot blade profile is an unbelievably useful and utility driven shape, really giving you both the cutting power of a straight edge, but with the strength and practicality of a drop point nose.
Named for the mythical creature to which the knife bears a striking resemblance, the Griffon is a whole lot of fierce packed into a small profile. Body of a lion, head and talons of an Eagle? Yup, that'll work! Plus, Pliny the Elder wrote, "Griffons were said to lay eggs in burrows on the grounds and these nests contained gold nuggets." So its got that going for it too!
This particular folder is fresh off the bench and built out as a beefy framelock in 6al4V titanium. The main body of the frame was given one of Dave's old school textures that dates back to 2004 when he was modding Striders on weekends.... Dragonskin! The Frame steps down to a flat milled pseudo bolster detail in the front, adding both visual interest and some extra grip that is even more useful than one would assume at first. Various milling details pull everything together and a hand applied wire wheel texture which was then glass bead blasted and tumbled finishes it off nicely.
A solid ti backspacer and hand fabricated clip made from a small billet of Ti itself make for an extremely solid folder. The addition of the Hinderer Knives Lock Bar Stabilizer (used under licnese) further secures and strengthens the framelock, doing double duty as both overtravel stop and lateral stabilizer. Bonus... it looks cool too!
The blade was hand hollow ground from Swedish RWL-34 and heat treated by Bos to a rockwell of 58rc. A two tone satin stonewashed flats with acidwashed grinds set it off nicely, yet will prove to be extremely durable in use. Unlike most Griffons made previoulsy with the spydie hole, this one makes use of a milled oval slot for thumbing open. The change to the look is subtle, but really in keeping with this knife's design.
Blade action is smooth and flickable, riding on phosphor bronze with a ceramic detent. All hardware is custom fabricated stainless, with the pivot screws being fabricated out of Titanium by Steve Kelly at TiConnector. Lock up is solid at 20% on face with a clean release.
A pit bull of a folder, highly functional and modern in design with a bit of old school flare tossed in for good measure. Griffon. Mythical creature made real.
