The Blackthorn design was the first knife Dave created and was the blade that launched this whole circus! It continues to be produced on a custom basis due to its extreme utility driven and useful layout. The Blackthorn "SD", has an abbreviated handle to help minimize the knife's footprint in a concealed situation or carried in Dave's favorite fashion... vertical on a backpack strap.
Although shorter in the handle length than the traditional Blackthorn, the Blackthorn SD has the exact same blade shape and size as the original. Essentially, you're just making use of the choked up grip and elimnating unused tail. The offset blade geometry still raises your knuckles up and away from what you're cutting, and the swooped spine detail makes for a nice spot to rest your thumb during skinning chores or forceful down cuts.
A deep hollow ground belly helps to increase actual cutting edge and the addition of a few serrations on this particular blade will prove useful for chord or rope cutting. Made from CPM154 and given a satin stonewashed finish for extreme durability. Heat treating was done by Bos, bringing the hardness to a rockwell of 58rc. Hard, but not so hard the end user can't put a fresh edge on the knife.
The handle scales were fabricated from green canvas micarta, given an old school dragonskin texture and contour then secured with satin finished Titanium bolts.
The kydex sheathing was done by Kevin at Tie Tactical Sheaths, and is a dual color level 2 retention sheath. Essentially, that allows the sheath to be locked closed so the knife cannot be removed or shaken loose. If you plan on throwing yourself out of an airplane, this sheath is "jump" safe. A Blade Tech "Tek-Lok" allows for multiple fast and easy attachment to belts, bags, straps, etc...
