Half-brother to the Butcher with an unknown father, the Bastard Son always lives up to its name around here when it comes time for Dave to grind this blade shape. A "butcher'esque" trailing point, with a Spade-inspired deep belly, makes for an intense concentration and expletive filed grinding experience. The end result is always amazing though, and there hasn't been a Bastard made yet that isn't totally lovable! And not just by its own mother.
This example is clean and classy in its appearance but deceptively complicated in its execution and construction. A heavily hand-contoured frame in 6al4V titanium is all done with a slack belt process, and just takes time, burns, and blood to complete. The subtle milled details are then added to the frame and set off the build and complement the linear design notes. The matching clip was also hand fabricated, and in itself requires more than 23 separate fabrication steps to complete. A satin "orange peel" texture finishes off all the titanium nicely, creating a uniquely beautiful and wear-resistant surface finish.
Mechanical lock support and stabilization in accomplished in this build using Dave's "hub cap" pivot, essentially taking the idea of the lock bar stabilizing disk and moving it to the pivot area where it becomes both more seamless in its design and closer to the area in which it is intended to support, the lock face. In this particular build, that collar is titanium paired with a stainless pivot.
The Bastard's blade here has been hand-ground from Bos heat-treated CPM 154 and given a satin stonewash finish. Single-handed operation made clean and flickable via the spydie hole.
A secure lockup on this build is approx 30% on face with a clean release, courtesy of a carbidized lock bar engagement.
