Proof that an unmarked cast splitting maul found in an Oregon barn, a mundane everyday objekt (yes I know I spelled it that way), with some time and effort can be made into something you're proud to own. To use. To pass down to your kid.
Found laying next to the American Shingling hatchet, this 1960's-ish produced splitting maul was also discarded to the dirt floor and dust bin of history. It was not as corroded, but not something most folks would notice. Dave immediately grabbed it because of its interesting size. It is smaller than what you go out and buy now! Just about the same size as the Stihl splitting hatchet that has proven to be so handy around here, we should have known the Germans didn't think of everything first!
Needing to be stripped in electrolysis bath, the head is wearing a nice even grey patina. Dave refaced, squared the end and high polished the face. Now clearly half sledge/half maul, the handle was just begging to shadow that ethos.
A bit long for added head speed, the 20" straight profile handle was fabricated by Emile at Trinity Boletus. Flat with a nice chanfered edge and just a bit of flair, this thing feels great in the hand. Dave's paint detail, done in a 50/50 black scheme with "Kingdom" imaged in negative just sets this thing off. And feeling the "this thing could be so cool" vibe all the way up in OH CaNADia, Emile really outdid himself with the scalloped detailed leather snap sheath.
You know what? F*** it. Not for sale. Or is it? Shit, I wanna keep it...
