Built for and first displayed at the 2019 Fall Reliquarium art show, the Ichabod 1790 art piece has been hanging in Dave's office ever since. Telling the story of Sleepy Hollow and the Headless Horseman with the use of collected antiques and restored relics, this custom art installation has always been one of our favorites around here.
An assemblage of period correct items include a first edition copy of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving dated 1906, a candle-burning carriage lantern that was found in France along with a pair of starched collars that have been signed "Van Tassel" and "Major Andre", symbolizing those heads lost. When lit, the carriage lantern illuminates the viewer and casts a bit of ominous red glow to the piece through its red glass side light. The antique folding spectacles are a fun detailed addition to evoke the love-struck schoolmaster Ichabod Crane. Finally, anchoring the story and cementing this art piece is restored and rehung Heritage Axe that was located in southern Sweden, and dates back to the 1790 timeframe for which the piece is titled.
Hand-fabricated board with brass fittings is made from quarter-sawn and dark-stained oak which would have been popular during America's early days, and not out of place in the dark hollows of upstate New York. Custom framing sets the piece off and readies it for display. 16" on center fittings allow for the most secure installation.
Hand-signed and etched brass placard by the artist, Dave Rydbom. "Ichabod 1790"
34.5" x 25"
