Swedish Hatchet

Located and shipped not far from where Dave's family is originally from in Linköping, Sweden. This hatchet is immediately recognizable in its Scandinavian design. Early part of the 1900's manufactured, forged with a high-carbon cutting edge laminated in. It arrived unmarked, as to who the original maker was is anyone's guess. 

Drawn to this hatchet like a moth to a flame, it became part of the personal collection while attempts were made to source methods to reproduce and make this design available in a production format. Hopes of 3D-scanning, with CAD renderings and laser sintering construction in small batches proved not only a mouthful to say, but offered head shaking and cost prohibitive quotes for production. Yes, the technology exists to do all that, which essentially laser prints a heat treatable exact replica of an axe head, then fitted with a duplicate wooden handle. But are you willing to pay $1000 per for a tool we'd like you to use and leave in the truck???

Hopes dashed..."sell it". Lesson learned, cost and tech will eventually hit a point on the graph when that makes sense, but not anytime real soon. Ask us in 10 years. Back to this...

Sporting a collection of scars and strike marks, all that was left as proof of its life and importance. Hand-wire stripped by Dave, the poll was squared and refaced as well. Still sitting with the handle loose in hopes of prototyping, Dave just affixed the handle and gave the hatchet an edge. An 18" hickory handle was fabricated in Quebec by Trinity Boletus, with the intention of being a great "back packing" size. It's spot on! 

Heavy enough to actually do some real work, but light enough to want to take with you. A Swedish dude really got that equation right a hundred years ago!
