Restored vintage "Timber Framing Axe" from Dave's personal collection. An extremely unique vintage peice located in Slovenia, stamped with a crossed hammer makers logo. Appears to be hand forged high carbon steel, with the unique addition of a nail pulling slot which is sized for a time when nails were hand forged square head affairs. The undercut "bearded" notch even appears to have been made so the axe could hang on a nail.
Hard to date a piece like this, but certainly from the earlier part of the last century. I was particularly drawn to this piece because of the head shape and the width/flair to the socket. Almost a Hansel and Gretel-Black Forest feel to it!
Now wearing a satin wire wheel finish, that will be easy to keep and maintain. It has a handmade white ash handle that was fabricated and fitted by Trinity Boletus in Quebec. Great care was taken in carrying the head lines into the haft, and creating a length and balance that made a head this size still feel light and very useable. Hand crafted leather sheath covers and protects an extremely sharp edge. The 50/50 light and dark handle finish was actual done by burning the lower half prior to wax rubbing.
Falling into a mid size range I would consider a "limbing axe" or "timber cruiser" it has an overal length of 27" with a 2lb head weight measuring 4.75" x 6" x 1.5" across the rear face.
Wearing the Rydböm Chop logo.
