KA Heritage Swedish Sculpted Collared Axe
Swedish Sculpted Collared Axe
An older piece dating from aproximately the turn of the last century. Hand forged, used for a lifetime or two and forgotten in a barn in Sweden... this axe made its way to the KA shop, where it was given a new lease on life.
Constructed in the traditional Scandinavian collared style, this head has a long sweeping head shape and gracefull curve to it's build. Loved and used a bit more than many of the pieces Dave has worked on over the years, the decision was made to move away from a traditional resotration. Hand sculpting a pattern seen mainly in knife scales created a unique and organic feel to this piece. A heavy bead blast and stonwashed finish compliments the antiqued nature of this head nicely. Structurally sound but still showing it's age and life, this axe is unique and still has a lot of life left in it!
The edge was put on using a slack belt for added strength in the cutting edge geometry, and is currently hair popping sharp. A hand fabticated leather snap sheath protects that edge, and was hand stained an nice saddle brown.
The haft was hand fabricated in Quebec by Trinity Boletus out of a nice piece of white Ash and finished off with a hand rubbed oil finish. The pomel is a unique take on the traditional flare that Emile is so adept at hand carving. Fitting the hand perfectly, this new shape strikes an interesting visual balance between a sweeping flare and a more squared off tail, further highlighted in this axe by the burned two tone detail. You'll be seeing more and more of this unique handle shape in the future.
The 21" long haft was chosen to hit the sweet spot of being short enough to pack and use as a camp axe, while retaining enough length for the head speed needed for effiecient felling. This one is begging to be put back to work!
