The earliest example Dave has ever found of Hedvall's work, this particular axe would date into the mid-1800s. Simply chiseled marked with his AH initials, more than likely before he had his stamp set fabricated. The pattern is a traditional Swedish design that crosses boundaries between a felling axe or timmeryxa (timber axe) but carries a flared and heavy edge popular with hewing axes. That edge style makes better work out of the process of "squaring up" logs into beams once they've been dropped.

Appropriately treating this piece as historical in nature, Dave elected to do the minimum amount of restoration work here. Stripped of its rust and crust by both electrolysis and hand wire stripping, that dark black patina really pops. The pol was not refaced, as to leave every bit of impact and curl imparted to this axe throughout its life. Additionally, a small crack was also left near the beard for the same reasons. The original edge is still on the axe and sharp enough to still do work! It will be the new owners' choice as to whether they'd like Dave to give it a brand-new edge, or leave the historical one there. Either way, it will wear a nice leather snap sheath for protection.

Hung on a long and curving 26.5" haft of white ash, this axe is a curving thing of beauty! Truly amazing craftsmanship by Emile Bournival in handcrafting this handle.

Mounted with brass fittings and hanging on a nice piece of Elm, this Hedvall example looks absolutely stunning in its gold-gilded custom frame! Hung and mounted by Dave, all these art axe installation boards and fittings are uniquely hand fabricated for each individual axe. This ensures that each hangs exactly as it should, and allows Dave to dip back into his woodworking days which is deeply satisfying. A hand-stamped and patina'd brass plaque marks and identifies this axe for future generations to appreciate and understand.
