Kingdom Armory 18th Century Framed Collared Swedish Axe
Recently located and Shipped to the KA shop from the South of Sweden. This hand forged Scandinavian relic of the past has been cleaned and restored using painstaking methods of electrolysis and hand wire stripping. Over 200 years of crust and scale was removed to reveal an amazing example of late 1700's Swedish Axe design and construction. Dated using historic design examples portrayed in Scandinavian Art, and Dave's experience with high iron content steels used in ancient axes.
This "Gammal Timmeryxa" (old timber axe) would have functioned as a multi- purpose axe, used not just for felling, but for limbing and hewing as well. No doubt this axe had served people well for generations before being forgotten about and set aside in a barn.
Once restored, the head was sent to Quebec where a custom 28" white ash haft was carved and expertly fitted by Trinity Boletus. The style used for the axe handle is a study in one of Emile's favorite Finnish designs. Exhibiting a less exaggerated curve and decorative flair before entering the collar, this design also incorporates a unique pommel that is both flared and rounded at the bottom. A masterpiece of craftsmanship just by itself!
Upon returning back to the Kingdom Armory shop, the work of creating a proper display for a historic piece of this nature began. Always trying to evolve the way history is observed and displayed for future generations, Dave constructed a solid American Black Walnut board that holds the axe using two hand fabricated and antiqued brass fittings. The brass plaque declares what the piece is, and wears both Dave's signature and the Heritage Collection Logo. Finally, a gold gilded and scalloped frame was custom fabricated and mounted to the board and completes the presentation.
The axe took a hair popping edge, which will be protected during shipping by a custom leather sheath that was also made up in Quebec specifically for this piece. While on the board however, let that edge glint!
Truly a statement piece for your living room, office... or museum if you happen to own one!
