Stand in the shadow of a Giant. Swede August Hedvall was known as "the Giant" during his tenure as head of the Uraförs Yxabrik (1866 - 1900) His personally forged axes are iconic and absolute perfection in design and construction. As a habit, Dave usually pulls every one he comes across to add to his personal collection...only recently deciding to release a few for public consumption.

By default, most axes made by the Giant are...well, Giant! His hewing axes are often twice the size of most others of the day and I'm sure he could use them single handed, although you'll want to keep both hands on them as a mere mortal. Spoiler alert- Thanos was real, and he was a Swedish Black Smith!

With that said, Dave was shocked to have recently come across a few examples of Hedvall's work still in the mother land that are light and nimble. Making for a very whippy and useful limbing axe when rehung. Mabe this was a thumb chisel for him, or a concerted effort to make a boy's hatchet. Whatever the reason, we thank his ghost and pay tribute.

Arriving here in the KA shop wearing a heavy crust of time and neglect. This particular example was just about perfectly “aged”! It’s this sort of conditional state that with some labor and scientific witchcraft, that a surface texture comes forth that just can’t be made without 100yrs of time.

Very prominent "AH" stamped into face attest to its orginal maker. Swedish collard design for strength with somewhat unusually long face/cheeks for reaching deep into a cut. What the Brits would come to refer to as a "chip chop". This axe was light and handy, and like the American "timber-cruiser," something you could carry all day limbing trees.

High carbon laminated cutting edge took and will retain a keen cutting edge. Although ancient looking, this axe is ready to be used high alongside any new contemporary.

Hung on a 28" Full burn detailed White Ash haft, that was hand crafted by restoration expert Emile Bournival out of Quebec Canada. The thin whippy nature of this handle just begs to be swung with it's graceful curve and balance. Hand tooled leather snap sheath protects then cutting edge.
