KA Custom Mega Butcher #8

Serial number #8 in the mega butcher design, Dave drew some inspiration from the mid century modern movement while building this folder with some truly unique characteristics. 

Most striking is probably the "tv" squared off opening hole in the blade. Yes, it's not the correct aspect ratio to match your 16:9 Samsung Qled. Think of your grandparents Television. The one built in the wood cabinet that you had to lay on the floor to watch as a kid. Now your in the right mindset!

The bolsters on this folder are made from brown canvas micarta and hand fit to inset into the Titanium frame, creating a bolsterlock configuration. The benefit of any bolsterlock is that you have the slim profile of a framelock, but the added benefit of a bolster which mechanically functions as a lock bar stabilizer on the lock side.

Unique to this folder is the way that was done. Instead of simply milling straight across the frame in a 90* orientation that breaks the solid Ti frame into that traditional "forward bolster, rear scale" look, Dave chose to bring the bolster up 2/3rds of the way to the spine and soften the interior corner with a 3/8" radius. The resulting look seems almost reminiscent of old fashion horse blinders, so of course the decision was made to "blind mount" the pivot underneath. The resulting clean look compliments the vibe of this knife very well, and nicely matches the opening hole in the blade.

Speaking of blade....This Beefy piece of Swedish RWL-34 is hand hollow ground in an Asymmetrical Compound style which steps on the presentation side just in front of the stag Chop logo. High sweeping hollow grinds converge with the exaggerated nose swedge that the Butcher is recognized for. Thin and slicely, this blade wears a satin stonewashed finish that looks great and will wear well with time and use.

The frame, backspacer and clip were fabricated from 6al4-V titanium. Various milled details, from the reverse radius (coved) edges on the spine and backspacer to the 3/8" fullers on the presentation side add a clean and modern look to the design. A hand wire wheeled satin orange peel texture was applied to all the Ti. 

Blade rides smoothly on phosphor bronze washers and an oversized detent that is utilized with all the large blades in the KA mega series. Truly, they all end up with a "feel" during cycling that would satisfy the most discerning fidget connoisseur. The solid thwack of a large folder blade never gets old! Lockup is bank vault at 20% on face with a clean release from a carbidized lock.

This Mega Butcher is both clean and understated in it's complexity, yet unmistakably striking in it's design. The evolution of the classic butcher design (now a decade old) continues...
