What would William Cutting carry off to a street scrap in the Five Points? A cleaver, yes… but one of particular note of course. How about a tip of the old top hat to the country that inspired our American freedom and democracy? A country that inspired and encouraged our own little revolution and declaration of freedom from tyranny. The origin of the gift that welcomed our ancestors to the new United States, the statue of liberty. France.

A French fabricated cleaver originally produced by Les Trois Frères sometime around 1910 and marked pattern #4 is the basis of this inspired period heritage restoration. 10” on overall blade length with an edge that sweeps up onto the nose, this thing is inspiring and evocative just in it’s shape.  So much so, that it just jumped out at Dave many years ago and he had to have it. Purchased from an antique dealer outside of Paris, it was rough, used, and just asking to be transformed. It took Dave the better part of a decade to hear it though… for the vision and theme to coalesce.

When it finally did, the perfect amalgam of independence and American historical expressionism came together. Hand carved scream eagle deer antler handle, restored French cleaver, and period inspired decorative etching pulls the vision together. Filigree, Stars, and a compass rose have been deeply acid etched into the blade and finished with a labor intensive buffing. The result is striking and compliments the age spots and scars this French tool has acquired over the last century! The handle was carved from a deer antler shed by a Artist/Carver Dave came across in Bali. Absolute exquisite craftsmanship and a work of art in It’s own right. I’m sure it was intended to display under a cloche… but isn’t it just cooler as a cleaver handle?!  Truly a statement piece. This is now a Heritage piece to be passed from generation to generation as a one of a kind expression of craftsmanship and story telling…
