Located in the south of Sweden, this particular Hewing axe a bit of a mystery. Obviously hand forged and constructed in a well recognized Scandinavian collared pattern, the only makers marks it wears are some chisel marked "K"s. Knowing that hand hewing ("squaring up") timber into beams lost it practicality in the mid part of 20th century while making note of the type of steel, and laminations present in this piece... Dave estimates this axes age between 1910 to 1940.
An absolutely massive cutting edge with thin tapering cheeks makes for an impressive axe. You can see why Sweden still carried out state executions with an axe into the 20th century. No thanks, give me the firing squad!
11.25" across the bit (edge) and 7" from that edge to the poll, which was refaced during the restoration process. The collar design is a common Scandinavian axe design trait, and especially present in Swedish and Finnish pieces as a result of having birch forests domestically. Birch is not as strong as ash, hickory, or oak... but it's what was available. So to help eliminate broken handles, the collared design was created which better distributes shock forces and allows the use of a softer wood.
In this case, swing away! The wood used here is white ash, and was hand fabricated in Quebec, CA by axe restoration specialist Emile Bournival. This is good to go for another 100yrs.
Half burn finish, Kingdom paint details, and Rydböm Chop logo and some additional flair and identification for the next generations provenance. Hand crafted leather snap sheath protects both the axe and it's user.
