KA Heritage Collection - 1800's Hand Forged Swedish Hewing Axe - full burn handle

Another amazing hewing axe find shipped over from Sweden, and brought back for a new life in the new world. 

Smaller and more compact that it's younger brethren Dave worked on this week, this hand forged example appears to be of older origins. Landing in the mid to late 1880's by Daves estimation, he has a vague memory of seeing the F.H. stamp in another axe many years ago. 

8.5" worth of cutting edge and 6" from that bit to the poll, this hewing axe is a manageable design. Slightly flared checks add heft and steepen the geometry for easier material removal during the hewing process. Additionally, the collar design is a common Scandinavian axe design trait, and especially present in Swedish and Finnish pieces as a result of having birch forests domestically. Birch is not as strong as ash, hickory, or oak... but it's what was available. So to help eliminate broken handles, the collared design was created which better distributes shock forces and allows the use of a softer wood.

This handle however is made from white ash, with a full burn detail...handcrafted in the traditional manner by axe restoration specialist Emile Bournival out of Quebec, Canada. Emile also fabricated the leather snap sheath you see in the pics.
